3M Looks to Create Next Generation of Household Appliances

The company uses its expertise and know-how to help appliance manufacturers build household appliances that are stronger, durable and more cost effective.

3M, driven by the latest trends in the appliance market, is looking to help companies overcome obstacles and reach their goals. Their advanced tapes and adhesives are used throughout the industry to reduce dishwasher noise and vibration, bond glass on to oven doors, fix refrigerator coils, touch foils to washers, and more. The company’s solutions can meet stringent appliance performance requirements and be used for assembly, attachment, identification, noise reduction and protection applications.

3M is on the verge of launching two new products designed to change the bonding technology used in the market.

The 3M VHB Extrudable Tape is just as easily automated and dispensed throughout the process as a liquid product, plus it has the advantages of a tape when using the adhesive. The innovative product aims to help appliance manufacturers improve sustainability, recyclability and process efficiency, whilst helping to reduce costs.

Also being launched, the 3M Hybrid Structural Tape offers an alternative to mechanical fasteners, liquid adhesives, and spot welding with the convenience and flexibility of a tape, as well as instant bonding and structural strength. The company says its new tapes will “change the game” when compared to current solutions due to its high strength and thin bondlines, which can be achieved in minimal time without any triggered curing process.

The home appliance market has continued to record strong growth, offering easy to use appliances and helping to improve quality of life for many people. In addition, new trends in terms of sustainability and automation, simplifying several household tasks while endorsing well-being have emerged. High-quality materials and aesthetically pleasing designs combined with innovative and technological functionalities are therefore becoming important elements for new white goods.

As Chairman and CEO Mike Roman explains: “At 3M, we use science to improve lives and help solve the world’s toughest challenges. We remain focused on executing our plans, and continuing to deliver exceptional value for our customers and premium returns for our shareholders.”
