Are OLED Displays the New Smartphone Material

Manufacturers have begun adding Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLED) panels to their lineup of devices beyond TVs, including phones and tablets. The screens are also thinner than  Liquid-crystal displays (LCD) by virtue of not requiring a backlight, and OLED displays are more flexible. The possibilities for technological innovation in OLEDs are vast, and this can be seen already in foldable smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy Fold Phone

LG and Samsung are working on OLED panels for smart devices, highlighting the growth in demand for OLEDs. This development will provide higher levels of brightness and efficiency for the same energy input. Samsung and LG are already receiving samples from manufacturers, and Apple is not far behind. Ricky Park, Senior Principal Analyst at tech research firm Omdia, believes that starting in “2024, Apple will adopt OLED in iPad Pro models.” As a result, demand for OLED panels for mobile PCs will increase rapidly.

OLED displays are environmentally sound and growing in popularity by being incorporated into a wide array of products. Omdia’s Display long-term demand forecast tracker claims that the demand for OLED displays is projected to grow at an 11 percent CAGR from 2022 to 2030 due to the incorporation of OLED technology into tablets, laptops, and smartphones. However, with this growth, the question remains: Will OLED be able to conquer any of the TV, smartphone, or mobile PC markets?
